As many who have followed New Media Cincinnati know, we have met regularly at The Pub at Rookwood Mews since September 2008. They know me and they know our group. They certainly have benefited from the $300-400 worth of business we have brought them each month during a time when they typically have not been busy.
I have not had a standing reservation with them for us to use their patio, and I’ve typically waited until the week before our Second Saturday event to call and reserve.
I approached the management at the beginning of the 2010 about providing drink specials and/or appetizers for our group, and I was told that they have typically charged for groups to use their patio. So I didn’t pursue it any further.
This past Sunday afternoon, I called to make our usual reservation, and I was told that I needed to call back on Monday after 8 AM to speak with Aaron, their manager. On Monday after 8 AM I called and was told that I needed to call back after Noon because that is when Aaron would be in.
I called at Noon and spoke with Aaron, and we set up the reservation from 4-7, like we have done in the past. After I got off the phone, he called me back and mentioned that, because of the World Cup (Super Bowl of Soccer for us who don’t follow the sport) and The Pub’s promotions for the event, they were actually unable to reserve their patio this month and next, since the tournament will go on over the next 30 days or so.
This naturally put me and the group in a very tight spot. I even considered cancelling this month’s event. Fortunately, we’ve been able to secure a venue for this Saturday and the Second Saturday of July – that all will be announced in a separate blog post.
So I’d like to personally thank The Pub for everything they have and have not done for the group. Please note that we will be using a different venue going forward.

[...] mentioned in an earlier post, we’ve had to make a last-minute venue change for this month’s New Media Cincinnati [...]
Too bad. That was a good location, but I can understand their motivation. I will keep my ear to the ground for a similarly central location with a casual atmosphere (ie. beers) that would be open to a group meeting like that.
Daniel,
Just got the invite to Lazer Kraze. It's not clear. Is the group playing lazer tag and the admission price is required to attend or is there any type of meeting/content or get together without the requirement to actually play lazer tag? Just trying to understand what to expect!
Thanks!
Crystal,
We're keeping it really laid back and social. Meeting together is the main
thing; playing games and laser tag is optional.

Heh heh, beers = casual.
Ah, thanks for the clarification!
It was poor planning and communication on their part not to let you know earlier that the patio would be unavailable during World Cup. But it sounds like you feel the group was too readily dismissed, given our history with The Pub.
The World Cup really is a big deal to soccer fans, and The Pub is exactly the kind of place that goes nuts during the tournament. It's bigger than the “SuperBowl” of soccer because it only happens once every four years, and because it's an international competition.
Plus, on Saturday, the USA plays England at 2:30pm. It's hard to imagine any matchup is going to beat that one for attendance at Irish or English-themed pubs that are showing it. In 2002 at Ginger's Ale House in Chicago, there was a line out the door at 4am for live showings of the games in Korea and Japan.
There's really no way we'd want to be there trying to talk about New Media in the middle of that. If you find a better venue, that's great. But I'd hate to see a kneejerk reaction out of spite because of a two-month interruption every four years.
