In 2006, both a contact I knew online and a friend from college both recommended Keith Ferrazzi‘s book “Never Eat Alone.” I didn’t need any further prodding; I bought it and read it. Then I read it again, much more slowly and deliberately. It transformed the way I look at building relationships.

Building Relationships for Fun and Profit – 12 Tips

Each week we find ourselves in different situations where we’re meeting people, opportunities to develop relationships. These situations require different approaches, depending on whether you’re in a large or small setting. Tomorrow the New Media Cincinnati community is meeting together to do just that. So, as your power tip for August, here are 12 principles from Never Eat Alone.

Mindset – Preparation

Don’t go into an opportunity to meet others cold. To help you get the right mindset:

1. First, stop networking and resolve to make friends instead. The chance encounter can turn into a blossoming friendship.
2. Don’t keep score. Give BEFORE you receive. Approach building relationships with a generosity mindset and determine to be helpful.
3. Have a mission and purpose in mind, both for yourself and your strategy. Why are you attending this event? What do you hope to get out of it?
4. Build it before you need it – whom do you already know that can help you reach your goals? Start building now for the future.
5. Do your homework! Since 2008 I’ve been using Eventbrite to organize New Media Cincinnati events. Those who’ve registered get a place to put their information, what they’re looking for help with, etc. Use this list to learn more about who you’ll be meeting, and it will help you in your conversations with them. Maybe someone is having a problem that you can help them with. Here’s the link to the August 2011 event.

During the encounter

You’ve made it to the event. You see a number of people walking around. It’s time to engage in conversations. What do you do?

1. Find shared interests. This is key to being able to “click” with one another. If it’s not obvious, you and the person you’re talking to have an interest in the event you’re attending. That is always a great starting point. Doing your homework will also provide conversations starters.
2. Be sincere. Pay attention. Remember names. Capture details about what you learn from those you talk to. Ferrazzi mentions that Bill Clinton would often step away after talking to people and make notes in a small notebook. I like to use the back of a business card to write down date, place, and any other information that will help provide context when I refer to it later.
3. Never eat alone. This is the title of the book for a good reason. Look for ways to connect in-person, not just online. Meeting together at a New Media Cincinnati event is just one of these ways. Everyone has to eat; share that time with someone you’re getting to know.
4. Master what Keith calls the “Deep Bump”. In a large group with many people, you might not have an opportunity have a long conversation with someone. So quickly make contact, establish the connection for a future meeting, and move on. New Media Cincinnati may or may not be such an occasion to use the “Deep Bump”.

Afterward and Beyond

After meeting someone, you’re not done. To be successful going forward:

1. Follow-up or die. Seriously – within 12-24 hours. Use the phone, email, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, etc. to continue to establish the connection and provide a means for continuing the conversation.
2. Keep it personal but not too efficient. While technology enables us to efficiently connect and communicate, be careful not to overdo it. Automated, mass-messaging may be efficient but might not be effective. Go for the personal message.
3. Never stop. Keep this mindset. Keith says we need to “ping constantly.” That means staying in touch often. Holidays are great occasions, but greetings are usually sent to everyone at this time. The birthday, on the other hand, is the most important day to someone. Make time to say something special for a friend’s birthday. You might be one of the few to do so.

So there you have it. Twelve tips for building better relationships for fun and profit. I’ve purposely left out the many more tips included in Never Eat Alone. If you haven’t read it, I can’t recommend it enough.

I put the call out to the community for people who would like to speak about the creative process, and Andria was one of the first to respond. With over 20 years experience in journalism, she presents some tips for writing for the web. Connect with her on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

Writing is like a blind date: you try everything hoping to impress who you are writing for and once that’s achieved, you keep them wanting more.

But how do you keep your content fresh and exciting? The web audience is fickle, and they will like you or hate you in an instant. As a print news reporter, I learned early on that I had only 3 seconds to entice a reader to read my story; otherwise they move on to the next story or photo. Today, web users give you only 1 second to impress them before they stay or click away.

Again, dating is a tricky thing.

Defining Value

All websites and blogs are based on this basic formula:

Audience +Content+Platform=Value.

Each of these components help to make a website or blog successful both in traffic and revenue.

But the tricky part of this equation is knowing your audience and writing your content. Remember, online the conversation is king but the content gives them something to talk about.

Your audience is fickle. If they like your subject matter and you entice them enough they will take a look at you and if they love you, they will share your link with others to generate more traffic.

Don’t Be Afraid Of The Blank Page

Creating content is the hard part. I know Daniel was telling me at times he has writer’s block and its hard facing that blank page, thinking, “What am I going to say today? The clock is ticking….”

Don’t be afraid of the blank page. The blank page and the delete button are your friend.

If you suffer from writer’s block and stepping away from your computer, laptop, netbook, smartphone or tablet does not work then try free association. One thing that I do is just type away on the computer. Don’t worry if it doesn’t make sense just type, eventually it will. Or pretend you’re a little kid discovering a piano for the first time banging on the keys. It’s nonsense, disturbing but fun and can trigger an idea.

If that doesn’t work then you can jump start your brain by answering a few simple questions:

• What is your favorite childhood toy?
• Growing up I loved to play?
• If I could be a child again I would do?
• I would love to be a?
• My best friend is and why?
• I once met……
• If God could…….
• I secretly enjoy……
• 20 things I enjoy doing…..
• What is your favorite exercise position and why?

By asking yourself personal questions, it jogs your memory, distracts you from your struggle and jump starts your brain. And if this doesn’t work go watch a bad, bad movie or reality TV. And then think how could I have done that better and the ideas flow.

One of the better tricks I use when I a looking for ideas is to keep a notebook or use the memo nearby for brainstorming. You never know when a good idea is going to pop up – in the shower, driving, watching a movie, talking with someone or just observing people on the street – great ideas come and go, but when they come you want to capture them at that second or you will lose it.

You Are News Gatherers And Content Generators

You have to remember now you all are media publishers and are in a sense news gatherers or content generators for your websites. If you have a laptop, smartphone, wireless card and a video camera, you are as powerful as any news organization.

News reporters write on a variety of topics; here in this community we all write about topics that we know. You have a certain way of thinking about the topic. Your point of view or experiences shapes how you write about that topic.

I encourage you to change how you approach the topic. If you always approach writing your content from one point of view, change it. People come to all topics from different viewpoints and you should try thinking from different angles. If it gives you a fresh point of view, you create new topics to write about and it eliminate any guesswork on the reader’s part.

Write For An Active Audience

Remember, when writing for the web it is an active medium. Web users are engaged readers who want to go places and get things done.

Always write in an active voice, never passive. Your readers or content consumers are multitaskers who want their content on their time, at their place and in their way. They don’t want to be bored because bored readers leave a website a lot faster than entertained ones.

Listen, Watch, Play and Chat:  this is what your content consumers are doing when they are reading your website. They are distracted from the beginning, but you want them to be distracted by your content.

Lead With What’s Most Important

What you say is important, and I advise everyone to write their content using the inverted pyramid. The inverted pyramid is the writing style news reporters use when writing a story. If you read any news story you always have the most important information on top and the background information in the bottom part of the story. By using this style you allow your readers to skim what you have written, which keeps them informed and entices them to stay longer on your site.

Also, keep your paragraphs short. One to three sentences paragraphs are fine. Brevity is key here. Write tight and omit all unnecessary words.

If you find your content exceeds 300 words use subheadings to break up the content. The subheadings help the reader scan the page more efficiently and keep the reader on the page.

Tell Stories

What entices people the most is great creative story telling. Michael Eisner, the former CEO of Disney, told Ad Age magazine, “..the missing part of the internet is imaginative storytelling.”

Well, we aren’t Disney, but in this room we all have a story to tell. Using anecdotes or a descriptive passage is the best way of telling that story. It keeps you entertained writing it, keeps the reader entertained reading it, and then if they love it they will share it with the world. Again, conversation is king and the content is what people are talking about.

Headlines: The Heart And Soul Of Your Content

Another way to entice readers to your website or keep them on your websites longer are headlines. Headlines are the heart and soul of your content. They sum up in just a few words what your content or story is all about.

When I was working for a daily newspaper in New Jersey some of the web headlines we used

• He took it in the butt – Roger Clemons and steroids
• Death by Chocolate – a man died in a chocolate stirrer
• McBurned – A million dollar mansion burned down

Terry Gross on Fresh Air had a headline on Facebook – Project Nim: Monkeying around with a chimp.

I changed it to Monkeying around with Nim.

Another NPR Headline – Georgia Farmers Hail China’s New Taste for Pecans.

I changed it to – China loves Georgia Pecans.

To practice short headlines look at the headlines that appear on news websites and change them so they are shorter but keep the same meaning.

Headlines are enticing, sensual, funny, unbelievable, shocking, etc. They are your marketing tool to get the word about the latest content on your blog or your website.

Have Fun!

Always remember when writing for the web have fun. Don’t agonize if the what you are working on is not right, make sure its accurate and you can always go back and change it. That’s the beauty of the web: you can correct anything just as fast you can delete something.

Cincinnati Named Most Social City by Mashable

Last Thursday, June 30, The Pub at Rookwood Mews was packed for Social Media Day!  We’ll have more to say about that in a separate post.

Google Plus in Limited Field Trial

Google + is Google’s latest attempt to make sharing on the web more like sharing in real life. Group contacts into Circles (Friends, Family, Acquaintances, and more), create Hangouts, etc.  It’s in limited field trial right now, with full public launch expected by the end of the month (7/31).

Chances are you may have received an invitation already. Check it out and let us know what you think! Is this more than just another social networking platform? What are some ways that marketers can use this?

Google Rebranding Blogger and Picasa

Mashable reports that the Blogger and Picasa names are going bye-bye, as Google re-brands the products as Google Blogs and Google Photos, respectively, as part of its larger effort to unify its brand under Google +.

As someone who first started blogging on the Blogger platform, it’s a bittersweet moment.

Once again, in the last 30 days the world of tech & social media is swirling. From basic news and recovery communications in dangerous weather conditions to the changing face of some of our favorite services.

Many of us have heard of the devastation of the Tuscaloosa tornadoes, but during the actual event many were first alerted by social media. Twitter and facebook were full of direct viewer feedback as well as pictures and video of the destruction. The Weather Channel’s Twitter Feed was busy retweeting the events all night. Even Birmingham’s ABC affiliate had a live UStream event running on their channel. One thing I learned from reading about this story is that there are hashtags commonly used for emergency weather tracking. The tags are formed using the state name & “wx”, so Kentucky is #KYwx and Ohio is #OHwx. It might be a good idea to set up a twitter search when the weather starts getting bad this spring. When Yahoo acquired Del.icio.us, many expected the service to go to the next level and by some accounts, perhaps it did. But the founders of YouTube have a different vision. Chad Hurley and Steve Chen have started a new venture, Avos, thought to be based around tools that help people get to grips with the vast amount of information generated by web sites and services. Yahoo, in the midst of an effort to trim expenses, decided Delicious wasn’t a top profit generator and sold the property to the startup. Hurley said “We’re excited to work with this fantastic community and take Delicious to the next level. We see a tremendous opportunity to simplify the way users save and share content they discover anywhere on the web.” They have already started moving the service to their platform (to be completed by July) and have a beta FF4 plugin to make it easier to share content. They have also clarified their TOS and seem to lean strongly toward the users rights! That’s refreshing in todays online world. Avos followed the acquisition of Delicious by acquiring Tap11, a leader in real time business intelligence platform. It will be interesting to see how they combine these technologies to, in their words, “provide consumer and enterprise users with powerful tools to publish and analyze their links’ impact in real-time”. We will be watching the Avos team to see how they impact the social media scene in the near future.

Speaking of acquisitions, the 800 pound gorilla has swallowed the Sky . Many of us in New Media Cincinnati use and love the Skype service. It’s been a “mostly” awesome service that allows us to communicate between computers anywhere in the world, for free. They also have services, for just $30 a year that either allow incoming or outgoing calls to landlines and cell phones. The service was purchased by Ebay not too long ago, then sold to a group of investors for just over $2B. Now Microsoft has purchased it for $8.5B just 18 months later. As a platform agnostic, my only concern for Skype would be that the Microsoft culture would overwhelm and possibly drown the Skype culture. I think that would be bad for the service. Obviously, there was concern that non-Microsoft platforms might lose access to the service, but Microsoft quickly stated it would be run as a separate wholly owned company and all platforms would continue to be supported. The belief is that Microsoft just wants access to the technology so it can integrate it freely into it’s product offerings. This of course, could lead to a win-win for everyone. If Microsoft does let Skype run as an independent company of sorts, the financial backing of Microsoft could allow the team at Skype to continue to innovate, possibly at greater speeds. We look forward to seeing how this plays out and if the service meets or exceeds their current level of professional results.

What does it take to build an online community?

Well, TBH (to be honest), it takes nothing less that complete commitment, passion and patience. It’s not an easy road, nor it hasn’t been an easy road for me (DEBBA HAUPERT, of Girlfriendology.com). I’ll share with New Media Cincinnati (aka: #NMCincy) some of the things I’ve tried, mistakes I’ve made and lessons I’ve learned at the February 12th, 2011 New Media Cincinnati meet-up.

The upfront disclaimer: “If you build it, they will come” – doesn’t really paint the whole picture. They may come or they may take their time to come, or they may not come at all. I am not an ‘expert’* at community building online – I’m just a passionate, persistent believer in ‘what-the-hell’ marketing who loves to see what will work and, honestly, won’t give up until it does work.

* For the record, I don’t believe in ‘Social Media “experts.”‘ Social Media is a moving target and we’re all learning as much/fast as we can and learning from each other. I’m happy to be a passionate ‘student’ of Social Media and a dedicated community manager for Girlfriendology.

Girlfriendology Overview (so you understand what this community is about and how it’s grown):

• Girlfriendology began as a blog five years ago – 100 podcasts, 100 BlogTalkRadio shows, products, events. Now doing a cruise, eBooks, Webinars, Kindle, licensing. Have worked with Frito-Lay, Kroger, Healthy Choice, Crystal Light, and last year did a tv and print ad for Biz.
• Make money through (since you all want to know!) corporate sponsorships and advertising, freelance social media marketing, products and strategic partners. Looking for sponsors – P&G, Kao Brands, other women’s national brands.
• Community has grown to 14k female Facebook fans, 21k Twitter followers (& block most men and spam accts), Facebook delivers 20-80k daily post impressions

10 Tips for Building your Online Community:

1. Define your Community Objectives & Goals –TIP: Be flexible but forward-moving.

2. Survey your Community –TIP: Ask your community about their social media preferences and then go where they are!

3. Plan your Updates to fit their Schedule and ‘Likes’ – TIP: Know your audience, their schedules and be consistent with your Facebook updates.

4. Schedule Your Updates –TIP: Plan ahead, create a schedule then pre-load your Facebook updates.

5. Use Social Media to Grow your Mailing List –TIP: Make it easy for your friends and fans to join your mailing list.

6. Create a Promotional Calendar –TIP: Create a Promotional Calendar with your different social media sites and opportunities for monetization (like affiliate links or products that you sell).

7. Ask them to ‘Suggest to Friends,’ RT, Forward to Friends –TIP: Ask your community to share your website and social media sites with their friends, then make it easy to ‘suggest your site.’

8. Every Blog Post, Interview, Guest Blogs, etc. … SHARE! TIP: Share your updates and links. And, share a link in a large portion of your updates.

9. Add the Facebook LIKE/Tweet this/Join my mailing list button on your Blog –TIP: Use Social Media to build your blog community, and your blog community to build your Social Media ‘friends.’ Make it easy for them to help promote your community!

10. Create a Conversation –TIP: Ask questions, listen to their response and don’t hog the conversation!

Social Media Week (SMW) is a global platform that connects people, content, and conversation around emerging trends in social and mobile media. The site is socialmediaweek.org. Started in 2009 in New York City, it grew to 6 cities in 2010. In September, they decided to make it biannual, growing to 11 cities and yesterday they finished events in 9 cities around the world. In person, online and on the mobile platform, SMW is talking about how Social Media intersects everyday life. The next one will be in September, so check out the website.

Foursquare set a new record, at the Super Bowl this year. There were over 200,000 checkins of people watching the Super Bowl last Sunday. There were checkins from all 50 states and 125 countries around the globe. Aparently, even the Pope might have checked in! It seems Green Bay had more fans checking in, and so many checked in that it caused Foursquare to crash in some areas. I guess this would be a Super Duper Swarm badge?

As many people probably know, Egypt recently had the internet pulled out from under them when protesters started their current peaceful assault on the government. It’s hard to imagine what it would be like to suddenly not have the internet available. Today, Twitter and Facebook are often the leading edge of breaking news, but the Egyptian government sought to quell that force. So what happened? Google, Twitter & SayNow (recently acquired by Google) quickly put together a new service, “Speak to Tweet” which allowed people to call one of three numbers, leave a voicemail and that message would be translated to text and tweeted under the hashtag #egypt. It was an awesome idea to keep those in Egypt in touch with family & friends and let the world know what was happening on the ground.
