NOTE: I originally wrote this yesterday but had problems publishing it.

Today is somewhat of a special day for the New Media Cincinnati community, because it’s the birthday of someone, without whom, the group might not have been possible.

In late Summer / early Fall 2007, I’d been connecting with a lot of people in the Dayton and Cincinnati area online through Twitter and Facebook. More and more people in Cincinnati were interested in meeting up in-person, but I didn’t want to create a group. I didn’t have time for it, etc. Still, no one had stepped up to meet the need.

One of the people I’d connected with on Twitter was Andy Osier. He and I had also connected elsewhere through a number of online groups, and we have been Instant Messaging buddies for quite some time. When I mentioned the growing interest in a meetup group for people in the Cincinnati area, he also was interested in helping out. I suggested the name New Media Cincinnati, and that we could get the domain name. He got the domain name and set up a Facebook group for us to organize around. He also created the LinkedIn group.

Andy still comes around to our monthly gatherings occasionally.

Please join me in wishing him a very Happy Birthday! Andy, New Media Cincinnati might not have been if it wasn’t for you. Thank you, man!

Last Thursday a number of us got together at TalkShoe to talk about New Media Cincinnati. We’ve been holding these planning conference calls since May 2009 as a way to share thoughts and set expectations for the upcoming Second Saturday event.

Many thanks to Don Sceifers, Vickie Sceifers, Anne Castleberry, and Michelle Beckham for joining me for the discussion.

On this call we talked about what it was like having the first event in Northern Kentucky at Lazer Kraze.
I’ve been in email conversation with Melissa Chambers from BusinessWire off and on over the past couple of months, and she recently let me know about this upcoming event, which you might want to attend. Below is what she said:

Good morning, Daniel.

On behalf of Business Wire, I’d like to invite you and the members of New Media Cincinnati to a Social Media ROI event on May 12 at The Phoenix.

As a commercial newswire service, we often find ourselves in a position to counsel communications professionals on press release distribution and social media participation. We have found that many people we talk to are excited about social media but have a hard time quantifying its success and, therefore, convincing the powers that be that it is worth their time. For this event, a panel of Cincinnati social media experts, moderated by Tech Czar Michael DeAloia, will provide our audience with practical advice for measuring social media ROI and identifying which social media resources best suit their needs.

Here is a link to more information about the event: http://bizwire.pr/socialmediaroi

I hope that you will be able to join us, and please feel free to spread the word to others in the New Media Cincinnati group who might be interested.

Thanks, and have a great day!

“Questions from a hat” proved very helpful and informative the last time we did it—about a year ago—in our monthly meetup. We’re bringing it back!

This is your opportunity to ask your social media questions and hear answers from several experienced people. This is also your opportunity to give back to the community by sharing your knowledge of social media.

In case you don’t already have some questions in mind (or written), here are some suggested themes. You don’t have to make your question fit into one of these, because these are just some springboard ideas.

iPad and it’s affect on social media

Social networking strategies

Production equipment and software

Privacy concerns

New services

Best practices

Favorite tools and resources

Get that mind working and come up with some great questions that will lead to great conversations!

New Media Cincinnati began in October 2007 as a simple meetup group of people in the Cincinnati, Dayton, and Northern Kentucky areas who were passionate about new and social media technologies like blogging, podcasting, Twitter, etc.

The group consists of people who are using new and social media for a living, but also includes people who are simply involved as a hobby. Anyone interested in learning more about these technologies and in connecting with others is welcome to attend. New Media Cincinnati has become, as one attendee remarked, “the premiere social networking event in the Greater Cincinnati area.” The group’s mission has grown to one of promoting digital literacy in our community.

People who come to New Media Cincinnati Second Saturdays

have face-to-face time with social media connections made online,

have the chance to talk about their own online presence

have opportunities to share something they know with the rest of the group

partake of food and drink and in general have a great time!

As a springboard from last month’s discussion about Google Buzz, as well as some other news over the past month about location-based social networking tools, this month we will have a panel discussion on Privacy in Social Media. We will have three panelists approach their use of social media with different levels of privacy.

As always, we will leave ample time for the open networking that so many of us enjoy.

Community Call – This Thursday Night

In case you weren’t aware, the next New Media Cincinnati Second Saturday for 2010 will be on March 13, 2010 back at The Pub at Rookwood. Tomorrow night we’re having another community planning conference call.

It’s a bit like inside baseball, or a behind-the-scenes look at how we make the Second Saturday events happen. We do this to review the previous month and help work out details related to the coming month’s event. This also gives members of the community to provide feedback.

This month’s Second Saturday topic: Privacy in Social Media

One hot button that came up from last month’s meeting, and still resounds in the social media community in general, is Privacy in Social Media. To that end, I’ve assembled a panel of members in the New Media Cincinnati community who approach their use of social media with different degrees of privacy. More on that in the coming days.

Needs: In order to make sure each of the panelists can be heard at the event, we will need some extra microphones. If anyone would like to let us borrow one of theirs, please get in touch with Don Sceifers as soon as possible.

How to join the conference call

The call will take place this Thursday, March 4, 2010, at 8 PM EST, via TalkShoe.com. If you haven’t used TalkShoe before, I encourage you to check it out. Direct link to New Media Cincinnati Community Call. In addition to calling in via phone, they have a web client that enables chat. I’ll use that to help moderate the call. The call will be recorded and posted at the New Media Cincinnati website. Here are some Step-by-Step instructions for setting up.

For those keeping score, this will be our ninth time doing this as a community.

How else to participate

As with previous months, in addition to the TalkShoe chat area, we’ll be paying attention to the Twitterstream. Should you wish to live-tweet the phone call on Thursday, we’re using the Twitter hashtag #newmediacincy. One way to help with this is via Tweetchat.com. Here is the room we’ll be using:

http://tweetchat.com/room/newmediacincy

Simply log-in with your Twitter account and you’re good to go! Alternatively, you can just use the #newmediacincy hashtag when you update Twitter.

Local Musicians! Opportunity for Exposure

Adding local music in post-production to the audio has been widely received. If you are a local musician or band interested in getting some exposure for your music, please contact me via my podcast e-mail address: daniel AT newmediacincinnati DOT com with links where I could download your music, giving me permission to play it here and on that podcast, etc. Or use the Contact page.

Final Thoughts

This is sure to be a great discussion. As I’ve said before, you all continue to inspire and encourage me. I so enjoy getting to know others who are passionate about this stuff and helping others to understand it better. Together we’re spreading the word that Cincinnati is a social media town!

Catch you online, on the phone this Thursday, and in-person on the 13th!
