As we begin to wrap up the 2011 season of New Media Cincinnati, it’s time to cast your vote for the NMC Digital Awards! These will be given at the November 12, 2011 New Media Cincinnati Second Saturday event. Last month we opened up the nominations so that you could share who you believe has done excellent work this year.

Social Media and Hurricane Irene

Social Media had a profound impact on delivering news during Hurricane Irene.  You could find an NYC Evacuation Center on Foursquare, learn about the aftermath and reaction of Hurricane Irene, view pictures of the calm before the storm, and of course – view “Hurricane Irene” twitter account.

Facebook Sharing – Privacy/Security/Settings

On August 23, 2011 Facebook organized two areas of content sharing: what shows up on your profile, and what happens when you share something new.

On your Profile:

• Content Sharing – Options such as hometown, latest interests, photo albums and more, now have an inline menu that allows you to control who sees a specific part of your profile. A side benefit of moving most of the settings to inline controls is a much shorter and simpler Settings page. (to view this simply click “edit” next to the content section you want to change the settings for)
• Profile Tag Review – Previously, photos you were tagged in would show up on your profile as soon as you were tagged.  Now – you can choose to use the new tool to approve or reject any post you are tagged in before it’s visible to anyone else on your profile. (to view this simply go to account settings in top right hand corner and select “privacy settings”)
• View Profile As – You can now view your profile as others see it.  If you go to your profile page and select “View Profile As…” you can view yourself from a different perspective.

When You Share:

• Inline Controls – Before in order to control who saw your posts you had to click around within the settings page.  Now there is an inline option for each post to control who and how you share your content. Also, when you tag someone the audience label will update to show that the person tagged and their friends can see the post.
• Change your mind after you post? – You can now change who sees your update even post you post through inline options.
• Tagging Locations – Before you could only “check in” to locations using a smart phone.  Now you have the option add a location to anything from your home computer.  Currently, there are no restrictions on your location post.  For example, you can say that you are currently in Paris, when – for example -  you are laying in bed from your home in Cincinnati.

This didn’t really seem fall within the categories above, but is really cool.

Your options for removing tags or content on Facebook are presented more clearly. Your options are: removing from your profile, removing the tag itself, messaging the photo owner or tagger, and requesting the content get taken down. (More details on tagging can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/about/tagging)

Update: The article I wrote above is a summary of social media news that I found interesting.  I kept the tone relatively formal and intentionally left out my opinion.  After sharing this with the New Media Cincinnati committee, I thought it would be fun to share my “two cents”.  So, if you are still reading at this point, here it is:

I thought it was really interesting how social media played a part in delivering information on Irene.  The actual @Irene account was a Product Strategist who was delivering information and communications about the hurricane.  While the tone was light, a lot of sources reported that “her” tweets were informative.   I was also impressed with the option to “check-in” to an evacuation center on foursquare.  It was designed to reveal a list of local evacuation centers and make it easier for residents within the area to find a center.

On the Facebook section of my post, I am really glad to see Facebook taking steps to make privacy easier to manage.  I like that I have control over accepting or rejecting tags of photos and locations.  The inline controls to make content sharing easier among certain friends was also a great added value for me.  While nothing is ever truly private online (especially Facebook), it brings me a bit of solace to know that controlling my privacy has gotten a little easier – even if it’s just an illusion of security.

Cincinnati Named Most Social City by Mashable

Last Thursday, June 30, The Pub at Rookwood Mews was packed for Social Media Day!  We’ll have more to say about that in a separate post.

Google Plus in Limited Field Trial

Google + is Google’s latest attempt to make sharing on the web more like sharing in real life. Group contacts into Circles (Friends, Family, Acquaintances, and more), create Hangouts, etc.  It’s in limited field trial right now, with full public launch expected by the end of the month (7/31).

Chances are you may have received an invitation already. Check it out and let us know what you think! Is this more than just another social networking platform? What are some ways that marketers can use this?

Google Rebranding Blogger and Picasa

Mashable reports that the Blogger and Picasa names are going bye-bye, as Google re-brands the products as Google Blogs and Google Photos, respectively, as part of its larger effort to unify its brand under Google +.

As someone who first started blogging on the Blogger platform, it’s a bittersweet moment.

Once again, in the last 30 days the world of tech & social media is swirling. From basic news and recovery communications in dangerous weather conditions to the changing face of some of our favorite services.

Many of us have heard of the devastation of the Tuscaloosa tornadoes, but during the actual event many were first alerted by social media. Twitter and facebook were full of direct viewer feedback as well as pictures and video of the destruction. The Weather Channel’s Twitter Feed was busy retweeting the events all night. Even Birmingham’s ABC affiliate had a live UStream event running on their channel. One thing I learned from reading about this story is that there are hashtags commonly used for emergency weather tracking. The tags are formed using the state name & “wx”, so Kentucky is #KYwx and Ohio is #OHwx. It might be a good idea to set up a twitter search when the weather starts getting bad this spring. When Yahoo acquired Del.icio.us, many expected the service to go to the next level and by some accounts, perhaps it did. But the founders of YouTube have a different vision. Chad Hurley and Steve Chen have started a new venture, Avos, thought to be based around tools that help people get to grips with the vast amount of information generated by web sites and services. Yahoo, in the midst of an effort to trim expenses, decided Delicious wasn’t a top profit generator and sold the property to the startup. Hurley said “We’re excited to work with this fantastic community and take Delicious to the next level. We see a tremendous opportunity to simplify the way users save and share content they discover anywhere on the web.” They have already started moving the service to their platform (to be completed by July) and have a beta FF4 plugin to make it easier to share content. They have also clarified their TOS and seem to lean strongly toward the users rights! That’s refreshing in todays online world. Avos followed the acquisition of Delicious by acquiring Tap11, a leader in real time business intelligence platform. It will be interesting to see how they combine these technologies to, in their words, “provide consumer and enterprise users with powerful tools to publish and analyze their links’ impact in real-time”. We will be watching the Avos team to see how they impact the social media scene in the near future.

Speaking of acquisitions, the 800 pound gorilla has swallowed the Sky . Many of us in New Media Cincinnati use and love the Skype service. It’s been a “mostly” awesome service that allows us to communicate between computers anywhere in the world, for free. They also have services, for just $30 a year that either allow incoming or outgoing calls to landlines and cell phones. The service was purchased by Ebay not too long ago, then sold to a group of investors for just over $2B. Now Microsoft has purchased it for $8.5B just 18 months later. As a platform agnostic, my only concern for Skype would be that the Microsoft culture would overwhelm and possibly drown the Skype culture. I think that would be bad for the service. Obviously, there was concern that non-Microsoft platforms might lose access to the service, but Microsoft quickly stated it would be run as a separate wholly owned company and all platforms would continue to be supported. The belief is that Microsoft just wants access to the technology so it can integrate it freely into it’s product offerings. This of course, could lead to a win-win for everyone. If Microsoft does let Skype run as an independent company of sorts, the financial backing of Microsoft could allow the team at Skype to continue to innovate, possibly at greater speeds. We look forward to seeing how this plays out and if the service meets or exceeds their current level of professional results.
