		<itunes:summary>Welcome to episode 001 of the New Media Cincinnati podcast, with your hosts, Daniel Johnson, Jr. and Matthew Evins.
This episode was recorded on Thursday, August 11, 2011. We met in-person at an Arby&#039;s in Fairfield, Ohio and shared some of the discussion going on in the LinkedIn group, as well as about Sir Paul McCartney playing in Cincinnati recently.
Shout-out to sponsors: Jazzmania Productions and BlueHost.
Download this episode directly: Paul McCartney, Tech Hotspots, and WordPress Blog Spam - New Media Cincinnati Podcast - Hosts: Daniel Johnson, Jr. and Matthew Evins
Running time: 27:04.
01:40 Excitement around the August 13, 2011 NMC Second Saturday event. One in three people registered are coming for their first time. In 2011 there have been many new faces showing up at these events, demonstrating a continued interest in this space.
03:00 Sir Paul McCartney in Cincinnati last week for a concert at Great American Ball Park. Some are suggesting this might have been his last concert ever in Cincinnati.
04:23 Other bands from the 80&#039;s in Cincinnati also last week: Journey, Foreigner, and Night Ranger. A couple days beforehand, Journey played on the Today show, sounding just as good as ever.
05:17 Business Week names Cincinnati 3rd most booming city for technology jobs.
07:05 NMC LinkedIn group - open for discussion but beware of the community banhammer for self-promotion.
08:41 Lisa Desatnik asked about suggested for preventing spam trackbacks on her WordPress blogs. Daniel uses the Disqus commenting plugin; Matthew uses a commenting plugin that uses Facebook Connect. Try Akismet (no longer free), Bad Behavior, Spam Karma (neither of have experience with that one)
14:17 Poll shared by Joanne Maly: Will You Abandon Facebook for Google Plus? - Most people say they won&#039;t just yet.
15:14 Charles Egerton shared a link: Why Texting Is the Most Important Information Service in the World
16:50 Props to Crystal Thies, the LinkedIn Black Belt Ninja, for sharing things you didn&#039;t realize you could do in LinkedIn for Tech Tuesday at the Clermont Chamber of Commerce. Very interesting are the different applications, honors/awards, projects, custom company pages, and using Signal to search status updates.

Before long we&#8217;ll be getting ready for the next Second Saturday event. If you&#8217;re unsure what to expect, then this post is for you. (Actually, this post is for the rest of us as well!)</p>
<p><span id="more-2491"></span><br />
<strong>What We Believe</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>We believe in promoting digital literacy in the Greater Cincinnati area.</li>
<li>We believe that connecting online is easy; connecting in-person is more important.</li>
<li>We believe in creating a forum where people interested and involved in social networking tools can meet those whom they have connected with online, to better get to know one another.</li>
<li>We believe in creating a stimulating environment where participants can learn and share something through a themed, topical discussion.</li>
<li>We believe in experimenting, trying new things, making mistakes, and learning as we go. As the tools we use continually evolve, so we will as well.</li>
</ul>
<div><strong>What We Do</strong></div>
<div>We&#8217;ve met in restaurants, pubs, and even at a <a class="zem_slink" title="Laser tag" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_tag">laser tag</a> facility! We&#8217;ve had group discussions, round table discussions, jolts, presentations, and social tagging exercises. We&#8217;ve been fortunate to have sponsors donate equipment, time, and even giveaway prizes.</div>
<div>We&#8217;ve recorded one another through audio and video, and have even experimented with live streaming technology. We take pictures of one another and share them with our Facebook friends. We <a title="Live Twitter updates related to and about New Media Cincinnati" href="http://newmediacincinnati.com/live/">update our Twitter feeds</a> with what&#8217;s going on during the event.  We check-in on <a href="https://foursquare.com/venue/16154164">Foursquare</a>. We write up blog posts about what we&#8217;ve learned and who we&#8217;ve connected with.</div>
<div>Not only that, but we still connect online through <a href="http://facebook.com/newmediacincy">Facebook</a>, <a href="http://linkedin.newmediacincinnati.com/">LinkedIn</a>, and elsewhere to continue the conversations we&#8217;ve started in-person. We&#8217;ve created great friendships. And some of those whom we connect with have become those we hire; others, those who have hired us.</div>
<div><strong>What to expect</strong></div>
<div><strong><br />
</strong></div>
<div>This is what social media is about. This is what you can expect when coming to a New Media Cincinnati Second Saturday event. This is why you should come.</div>

		</div>
<p>Let there be no doubt: new media is alive and well in <a class="zem_slink" title="Cincinnati" rel="homepage" href="http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov">Cincinnati, Ohio</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://twitter.com/michellebeckham/status/7570882322" target="_blank">Approximately 70 people</a> packed into the patio at <a href="http://www.luvthepub.com/pub_rookwood.html" target="_blank">The Pub at Rookwood Mews</a> this afternoon for the first <a title="Cincinnati social media networking group" href="http://newmediacincinnati.com" target="_blank">New Media Cincinnati</a> Second Saturday event of 2010.  As I was planning this out, I and others wondered if people would show up, given that the AFC Wildcard Playoff game between the <a href="http://www.cincinnatibengals.com" target="_blank">Cincinnati Bengals</a> and the <a class="zem_slink" title="New York Jets" rel="homepage" href="http://www.newyorkjets.com/">New York Jets</a> was happening about the same time.<span id="more-931"></span></p>
<p>With the game muted in the background, several social media practitioners and enthusiasts gathered together in the heated, paneled patio of the Pub to network with one another and learn about some of the changes to the tax laws in 2009 from Chad Middleton from <a href="http://www.outerwoven.me" target="_blank">Outerwoven</a>, who sponsored the event.</p>
<h3>Opening Remarks</h3>
<p>In my opening remarks I reminded us when <a href="http://newmediacincinnati.com/how-have-we-changed-in-2009-second-saturday-recap/" target="_blank">we last met in November 2009</a> and learned of people who had started blogs, podcasts, Twitter accounts, Facebook accounts, businesses because of their involvement in the new media community. I encouraged the community to try hard in 2010, to try hard enough to fail, to make their involvement in this space worth their lives. Social media is ripe for experimentation, and we need to learn from one another.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the link to the <a href="http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/3865669" target="_blank">intro video</a>. For some reason the sound on my microphone kept going in and out.</p>

<li><a href="http://twitter.com/julieunplugged" target="_blank">Julie Bogart</a> mentioned she celebrated her 10-year anniversary of her <a href="http://www.bravewriter.com" target="_blank">Bravewriter</a> business this week. <em>Who among us will start a business this year?</em></li>

<li><a href="http://www.socialgumbo.com" target="_blank">George Williams</a> announced a new experiment in hyperlocal citizen journalism and community-building entitled <a href="http://www.cincyvoices.com" target="_blank">Cincy Voices</a>, launching next week. Be sure to connect with <a href="http://twitter.com/socialgumbo" target="_blank">George</a> to get involved in this project.</li>
</ul>
<p>Here&#8217;s a <a href="http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/3866710" target="_blank">corresponding video</a> of these last two announcements:</p>
<p><object id="utv641732" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="480" height="386" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="name" value="utv_n_211480" /><param name="flashvars" value="loc=%2F&amp;autoplay=false&amp;vid=3866710" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.ustream.tv/flash/video/3866710" /><embed id="utv641732" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="386" src="http://www.ustream.tv/flash/video/3866710" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="loc=%2F&amp;autoplay=false&amp;vid=3866710" name="utv_n_211480"></embed></object></p>
<h3>2009 Tax Changes &#8211; Featured Speaker</h3>
<p>It was really great to have Chad Middleton from <a href="http://www.outerwoven.me" target="_blank">Outerwoven</a> give us a low-down on some of the many changes to the tax laws that went into effect within the past year. New and updated tax credits and deductions are available. Some serious caveats as well.</p>
<p>For some reason the <a class="zem_slink" title="Ustream" rel="homepage" href="http://ustream.tv">UStream</a> feed was a bit flaky and it caused the video stream to break up. Here&#8217;s the <a href="http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/3866083" target="_blank">first video</a> of Chad&#8217;s talk:</p>
<p><object id="utv892411" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="480" height="386" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="name" value="utv_n_174337" /><param name="flashvars" value="loc=%2F&amp;autoplay=false&amp;vid=3866083" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.ustream.tv/flash/video/3866083" /><embed id="utv892411" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="386" src="http://www.ustream.tv/flash/video/3866083" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="loc=%2F&amp;autoplay=false&amp;vid=3866083" name="utv_n_174337"></embed></object></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the <a href="http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/3866180" target="_blank">second video</a> of Chad&#8217;s talk:</p>
<p><object id="utv713795" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="480" height="386" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="name" value="utv_n_50654" /><param name="flashvars" value="loc=%2F&amp;autoplay=false&amp;vid=3866180" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.ustream.tv/flash/video/3866180" /><embed id="utv713795" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="386" src="http://www.ustream.tv/flash/video/3866180" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="loc=%2F&amp;autoplay=false&amp;vid=3866180" name="utv_n_50654"></embed></object></p>
<p>Chad&#8217;s other website for Blackberries is <a href="http://www.themes4bb.com" target="_blank">Themes4BB</a>.</p>
<h3>Final thoughts</h3>
<p>Thanks again to everyone who came out and has followed the group online. If the first Second Saturday is any indication, this is going to be a great year for the community. I can&#8217;t wait to see what we come up with together.</p>
