Well, TBH (to be honest), it takes nothing less that complete commitment, passion and patience. It’s not an easy road, nor it hasn’t been an easy road for me (DEBBA HAUPERT, of Girlfriendology.com). I’ll share with New Media Cincinnati (aka: #NMCincy) some of the things I’ve tried, mistakes I’ve made and lessons I’ve learned at the February 12th, 2011 New Media Cincinnati meet-up.

The upfront disclaimer: “If you build it, they will come” – doesn’t really paint the whole picture. They may come or they may take their time to come, or they may not come at all. I am not an ‘expert’* at community building online – I’m just a passionate, persistent believer in ‘what-the-hell’ marketing who loves to see what will work and, honestly, won’t give up until it does work.

* For the record, I don’t believe in ‘Social Media “experts.”‘ Social Media is a moving target and we’re all learning as much/fast as we can and learning from each other. I’m happy to be a passionate ‘student’ of Social Media and a dedicated community manager for Girlfriendology.

Girlfriendology Overview (so you understand what this community is about and how it’s grown):

Girlfriendology began as a blog five years ago – 100 podcasts, 100 BlogTalkRadio shows, products, events. Now doing a cruise, eBooks, Webinars, Kindle, licensing. Have worked with Frito-Lay, Kroger, Healthy Choice, Crystal Light, and last year did a tv and print ad for Biz.

Make money through (since you all want to know!) corporate sponsorships and advertising, freelance social media marketing, products and strategic partners. Looking for sponsors – P&G, Kao Brands, other women’s national brands.

Community has grown to 14k female Facebook fans, 21k Twitter followers (& block most men and spam accts), Facebook delivers 20-80k daily post impressions

10 Tips for Building your Online Community:

About the Author
Debba Haupert founded Girlfriendology.com in 2006 as a community of women based on inspiration, appreciation and celebration of female friendship. She speaks on friendship and social media and has worked with ConAgra, Healthy Choice, Frito-Lay, Kroger, Biz detergent, Crystal Light, etc. You can find her at Girlfriendology.com, on Twitter @Girlfriendology and Facebook.com/Girlfriendology.

Note: This is just the highlights from the New Media Cincinnati presentation. This presentation was based on a guest blog (9 Tips to Managing a Growing, Successful Facebook Community) I wrote for Feedblitz.com (Email, RSS and Social Media Marketing Automation – a service I use and highly recommend). Thanks for reading, listening and sharing!

Each year HOPE Worldwide in Cincinnati collects food for food boxes that are delivered to agencies that help feed the hungry during the holidays. Last year at this time New Media Cincinnati collected enough food to fill up two boxes of food (Breanna Gaddie took some pictures). That’s enough food for two families to live on for a week!

This year, we’re planning on donating three boxes. Food will be collected on at the event this coming Saturday, November 13th.

The easiest way you can help is by buying a donation ticket when you register for the event.

Some other ways you can help are by bringing items listed for each box below. If you want, you can also bring a Kroger gift card that can be used to purchase perishable items. Please check expiration dates before including items.

For each box of food:

Vegetables: 4 cans

Fruit: 2 cans

Cereal: 1 large or 2 small boxes

Crackers: 1 large or 2 small boxes

Soup: 2 large or 4 small cans

Peanut Butter: 1 large or 2 small jars

Jelly: 1 large or 2 small jars

Potatoes, dried: 1 box

Mac & Cheese: 2 boxes

Rice: 1 box or bag

Pasta: 1 box or bag

Pasta sauce: 1 large or 2 small jars

Tuna: 2 cans

Chicken: 2 cans

Complete Meal: 2 boxes

NOTE: I originally wrote this yesterday but had problems publishing it.

Today is somewhat of a special day for the New Media Cincinnati community, because it’s the birthday of someone, without whom, the group might not have been possible.

In late Summer / early Fall 2007, I’d been connecting with a lot of people in the Dayton and Cincinnati area online through Twitter and Facebook. More and more people in Cincinnati were interested in meeting up in-person, but I didn’t want to create a group. I didn’t have time for it, etc. Still, no one had stepped up to meet the need.

One of the people I’d connected with on Twitter was Andy Osier. He and I had also connected elsewhere through a number of online groups, and we have been Instant Messaging buddies for quite some time. When I mentioned the growing interest in a meetup group for people in the Cincinnati area, he also was interested in helping out. I suggested the name New Media Cincinnati, and that we could get the domain name. He got the domain name and set up a Facebook group for us to organize around. He also created the LinkedIn group.

Andy still comes around to our monthly gatherings occasionally.

Please join me in wishing him a very Happy Birthday! Andy, New Media Cincinnati might not have been if it wasn’t for you. Thank you, man!

It’s time for another New Media Cincinnati conference call!

Background

Putting together a New Media Cincinnati event each month takes up a lot of time. People come wanting to have a good time and meet people they’ve made connections with online. Those who attend often expect for there to be some sort of structured discussion – a topic or theme.

I decided some months ago that the New Media Cincinnati Second Saturday event will be a free (no admission), community-run event. In the beginning, I was able to plan, organize, run, and do the followup for the event. Not so anymore.

Conference calls

In May 2009 I started conducting these conference calls for anyone in the community who wanted to participate. These calls had two main purposes:

Provide feedback on the previous month’s event

Set expectations and discuss the upcoming event

As the group has matured, I find I’m relying more and more on help from the community to make this event happen each month.

Details

When: Thursday, June 24, 2010 8-9 PM EDT

http://www.talkshoe.com/tc/49025

TalkShoe has a web client and downloadable software to text chat with others who are also on the call. Note that the web client does not work well in Google Chrome.

Calling instructions:

Dial: (724) 444-7444

Enter: 49025 # (Call ID)

Enter: 1 # (unless you already have a TalkShoe account associated with your phone)

Possible items for discussion:

New Media Cincinnati in Northern Kentucky at Lazer Kraze this past month (seen this video?)

Podcamp Ohio/WordCamp Columbus (did you go?)

Venue change (we’re meeting at Molly Malone’s in Covington)

Steering Committee (ooh)

I’ve been in email conversation with Melissa Chambers from BusinessWire off and on over the past couple of months, and she recently let me know about this upcoming event, which you might want to attend. Below is what she said:

Good morning, Daniel.

On behalf of Business Wire, I’d like to invite you and the members of New Media Cincinnati to a Social Media ROI event on May 12 at The Phoenix.

As a commercial newswire service, we often find ourselves in a position to counsel communications professionals on press release distribution and social media participation. We have found that many people we talk to are excited about social media but have a hard time quantifying its success and, therefore, convincing the powers that be that it is worth their time. For this event, a panel of Cincinnati social media experts, moderated by Tech Czar Michael DeAloia, will provide our audience with practical advice for measuring social media ROI and identifying which social media resources best suit their needs.

Here is a link to more information about the event: http://bizwire.pr/socialmediaroi

I hope that you will be able to join us, and please feel free to spread the word to others in the New Media Cincinnati group who might be interested.

Thanks, and have a great day!
