Last week we spent some time chatting about the upcoming New Media Cincinnati Second Saturday, which will be on February 13, 2010. Direct download (mp3, 57:27, 51.7 MB). Many thanks to all who participated live on the call, whether you were able to dial in or not. We played music from local artists, recapped our time together in January, and discussed some ideas for the February event and some ways you might be able to participate.

Music

Special thanks to Michelle Beckham-Corbin for connecting us with The Honneycombs, another band from the Cincinnati area. Last week we spent some time chatting about the upcoming New Media Cincinnati Second Saturday, which will be on February 13, 2010. Direct download (mp3, 57:27, 51.7 MB). Many thanks to all who participated live on the call, whether you were able to dial in or not. Music
Special thanks to Michelle Beckham-Corbin for connecting us with The Honneycombs, another band from the Cincinnati area.

Let there be no doubt: new media is alive and well in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Approximately 70 people packed into the patio at The Pub at Rookwood Mews this afternoon for the first New Media Cincinnati Second Saturday event of 2010. As I was planning this out, I and others wondered if people would show up, given that the AFC Wildcard Playoff game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the New York Jets was happening about the same time.

With the game muted in the background, several social media practitioners and enthusiasts gathered together in the heated, paneled patio of the Pub to network with one another and learn about some of the changes to the tax laws in 2009 from Chad Middleton from Outerwoven, who sponsored the event.

Opening Remarks

In my opening remarks I reminded us when we last met in November 2009 and learned of people who had started blogs, podcasts, Twitter accounts, Facebook accounts, businesses because of their involvement in the new media community. I encouraged the community to try hard in 2010, to try hard enough to fail, to make their involvement in this space worth their lives. Social media is ripe for experimentation, and we need to learn from one another.

Here’s the link to the intro video. For some reason the sound on my microphone kept going in and out.

Announcements a-plenty!

A quick recap of some of the many announcements made is below. I’ll let those who made them provide further details in the comments.

2009 Tax Changes – Featured Speaker

It was really great to have Chad Middleton from Outerwoven give us a low-down on some of the many changes to the tax laws that went into effect within the past year. New and updated tax credits and deductions are available. Some serious caveats as well.

For some reason the UStream feed was a bit flaky and it caused the video stream to break up. Here’s the first video of Chad’s talk:

Here’s the second video of Chad’s talk:

Final thoughts

Thanks again to everyone who came out and has followed the group online. If the first Second Saturday is any indication, this is going to be a great year for the community. I can’t wait to see what we come up with together.

Music
Special thanks to Dayton-area singer/songwriter and New Media Cincinnati friend Rich Palmer for giving permission to play his music. You can follow Rich on Twitter: @richpalmer.

"Don't Tell Me Any Lies" (unreleased, played through special permission)
"Avatar Girl" (via Mevio's Music Alley)

Bumper music used is "Surf Babe" from Alamantra as found on Mevio's Music Alley. Thanks again to them for letting us use their music on this program.
Social Media Event Calendar

New Media Cincinnati Second Saturday for November 2009: November 14, 2009 from 4-7 PM at The Pub at Rookwood Mews. Details and RSVP coming shortly. This is the last meetup for 2009!
	Cincinnati Social Media group:

Check out the LinkedIn group and via prblog
Get on the Cincinnati Twitter List

Cincinnati Women Bloggers: 4th Saturday of the month. Details coming soon at their website and via cinwomenblogger

Discussion

Special thanks to Carole Hicks for the idea for having a simultaneous meetup at the recent SummitUp in Dayton. She set up the New Media Dayton twitter feed for news about the group.
Bryan Suddith will be the host for the New Media Dayton event.
	Other chatroom/call participants:

	Jeanne Bernish
	Jeff Hertlein
	Don Sceifers
	Bill Green
	Jim Sutter
	Michelle Beckham
	Chris Celek
	Jim Farley
	Jennifer Mitchell
	Margo Rose
	Vickie Sceifers
	Sara Carbaugh

Don Sceifers talked about how UStreaming of events has developed throughout 2009 to the quality it is now. We have wireless microphones and portable speakers, and Don and Tom Rockhold have been doing a great job managing this aspect of Second Saturdays.
	October Second Saturday review:

	Branding/ice-breaker exercise was well-received.

Name tag with a word you use to describe yourself
Smaller tags to write down words to describe others you've had conversations with

We were able to meet and talk with just about everyone

	November Second Saturday:

Twitter will be the main vehicle for communication (#newmediacincy, #NMD)
New Media Cincinnati will broadcast links to UStream to Twitter.
We will look for a link to what New Media Dayton will do.
Depending on the technology used, we might be able to "cohost" one another's streams.
Don Sceifers is the point person for New Media Cincinnati UStream. Dylan Combs might also be a resource.
Topic - since this is the last meetup for 2009, we'll be talking about

	What we've learned in 2009
	How we've changed in 2009
Everyone shared some really inspiring stories on the call
Looking forward to more on the 14th

Encouragement for the New Media Dayton folks as you're just starting out
Final roll call (Twitter, website URLs)
Next Steps

Look for the Eventbrite invitations for New Media Cincinnati via e-mail and at the website in the next day or so.
Contact me if you'd like to be added to the list.
Make plans to attend the last Second Saturday event for 2009 on November 14, 2009!
Get ready for another great discussion and some great open networking.

Background and History of New Media Cincinnati

New Media Cincinnati began in October 2007 with a couple handfuls of people connected through Twitter and other social media. Many were podcasters and bloggers.

The next New Media Cincinnati Second Saturday will be the tw0-year anniversary for the group!

Over the past two years, the group has grown into a welcoming environment for others curious and interested in new and social media, as well as a time for people to learn new things about social media technologies.

Types of structured discussions we’ve had in the past several months: social tagging, new media roundtables, Jolts, featured speakers, unconference, questions from a hat, iRiver introductions, etc.

We have been able to “curate” and elevate the experience others have had from the event through the use of things like

live-tweeting with the #newmediacincy hashtag on Twitter

taking pictures and posting them online to Flickr and elsewhere

using UStream.tv to provide video

individuals blogging about their experiences from events

recorded audio podcasts

September 2009 Second Saturday Review

The topic for the structured discussion was “Colleagues or Competitors?” Catch the recap with video from last month’s event.

People come to events like this to meet others and build relationships. Business gets done outside of the group and is based on the relationships individuals have made themselves.

October 2009 Second Saturday Format

It’s the 2-year birthday/anniversary of the group.

Some ideas suggested:

A Halloween theme: what scares you about social media? (a twist on Questions from a Hat?)

Social tagging/personal branding ice breaker exercise (what we did in January)

Scavenger hunt ice breaker exercise

Discuss dynamics of connecting with people online and then meeting in-person
