05:25 Google Plus. Public and private posts, like a combo between Facebook and Twitter. Some other similarities to LinkedIn and even blogging.

07:24 Google Plus mobile app has a Nearby stream that lets you see what others are posting. You can connect to others you might not already know. Photos added to a queue that you can opt to share with others. Can share to individuals or circles or to all circles.

08:50 Social Media Overload: Remember your goals and what you’re looking to get out of it.

11:07 Businesses are offering incentives to encourage those who engage with them in social media.

12:10 Other trends… Accessing social media via mobile devices, virtual commerce, and gamification.

<itunes:summary>Welcome to episode 001 of the New Media Cincinnati podcast, with your hosts, Daniel Johnson, Jr. and Matthew Evins.
This episode was recorded on Thursday, August 11, 2011. We met in-person at an Arby's in Fairfield, Ohio and shared some of the discussion going on in the LinkedIn group, as well as about Sir Paul McCartney playing in Cincinnati recently.
Shout-out to sponsors: Jazzmania Productions and BlueHost.
Download this episode directly: Paul McCartney, Tech Hotspots, and WordPress Blog Spam - New Media Cincinnati Podcast - Hosts: Daniel Johnson, Jr. and Matthew Evins
Running time: 27:04.
01:40 Excitement around the August 13, 2011 NMC Second Saturday event. One in three people registered are coming for their first time. In 2011 there have been many new faces showing up at these events, demonstrating a continued interest in this space.
03:00 Sir Paul McCartney in Cincinnati last week for a concert at Great American Ball Park. Some are suggesting this might have been his last concert ever in Cincinnati.
04:23 Other bands from the 80's in Cincinnati also last week: Journey, Foreigner, and Night Ranger. A couple days beforehand, Journey played on the Today show, sounding just as good as ever.
05:17 Business Week names Cincinnati 3rd most booming city for technology jobs.
07:05 NMC LinkedIn group - open for discussion but beware of the community banhammer for self-promotion.
08:41 Lisa Desatnik asked about suggested for preventing spam trackbacks on her WordPress blogs. Daniel uses the Disqus commenting plugin; Matthew uses a commenting plugin that uses Facebook Connect. Try Akismet (no longer free), Bad Behavior, Spam Karma (neither of have experience with that one)
14:17 Poll shared by Joanne Maly: Will You Abandon Facebook for Google Plus? - Most people say they won't just yet.
15:14 Charles Egerton shared a link: Why Texting Is the Most Important Information Service in the World
16:50 Props to Crystal Thies, the LinkedIn Black Belt Ninja, for sharing things you didn't realize you could do in LinkedIn for Tech Tuesday at the Clermont Chamber of Commerce. Very interesting are the different applications, honors/awards, projects, custom company pages, and using Signal to search status updates.

UPDATE: Kevin Dugan has taken himself out of the running for the NMC Digital Native Award. Please see below for more info

As we approach the end of another season of New Media Cincinnati this week, we’ll be reflecting back on what has happened this past year and how we’ve changed through our involvement in this space. As mentioned previously, this year we’re giving away New Media Cincinnati Digital Awards to recognize and encourage those who have done great work, not only in our community but also in the Greater Cincinnati area.

We put out the call for nominations, and you responded. The complete list of the 2010 New Media Cincinnati Digital Award Nominees is as follows:

NMC Digital Native Award

Exemplary dedication to the practice and promotion of digital literacy and community building in the Greater Cincinnati area over the past year.

Mike Boehmer

Michelle Beckham

Daniel Johnson, Jr.

Christian Sheehy

Kevin Dugan

Kevin emailed, upon being notified that he’d been nominated, asking that he be removed from the list of nominees in order that others may receive recognition. While extremely honored by the votes and nomination, he wants to shine a broader light on the community, since there are so many people doing such great work.

The New Media Cincinnati Steering Committee accepts his reasoning, since it’s the reason we created the award in the first place.

NMC Digital Giving First Award

Outstanding support toward members and potential members of the New Media Cincinnati community by sharing expertise and raising awareness through education and example both within meetings and during after-hours over the past year.

Michelle Beckham

Vickie Sceifers

Christiaan Todd

Crystal Thies

NMC Digital Go the Distance Dedication Award

Sincere dedication to attend New Media Cincinnati events. Person who has dedicated his or her time, energy, and resources to consistently travel a great distance to listen, learn, and contribute to New Media Cincinnati.

Tom Rockhold

Daniel Johnson, Jr.

Don and Vickie Sceifers

Read what has been said about this year’s nominees.

In order to vote, you MUST register to come to this Saturday’s event.

NMC Digital Native Award

Mike Boehmer

“I believe Mike Boehmer deserves to win the NMC Digital Award. I know from personal experience that Mike spends so much time reading books and searching the Internet to learn the latest trends. And he is always on his Droid and uses other tools to practice what he knows… And he generously shares his knowledge with others through networking, personal contacts and his blog. Mike has become known around the city as someone who not only knows social media; but actually practices it.

“Here is a list of talks and services he has given free of charge to help promote digital literacy and community building over the past year:

Bold Fusion by Cincinnati USA Chamber of Commerce in 2009

Clermont County Chamber of Commerce Social Media Bootcamp

Cincinnati PRSA chapter

Ohio Job and Family Services IT directors in Columbus

Ohio Job and Family Services county and state agency directors in Columbus

Arkansas Department of Human Services

Served as the first social media chair of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Tweeted and/or blogged from many of PRSA’s events this year

Was named Hamilton County Employee of the Year for Innovation in 2009 (to help improve communication with the community after the agency’s cutbacks)

Social media work at Hamilton County JFS has been detailed in several national government journals

Served as guest blogger at BlogWell and guest Tweeter at Bold Fusion 2010.

Always tweeting/blogging from events such as the Digital Non-Conference.”

Michelle Beckham

“… for her inspiration and leadership in delivering for our community Social Media with a servant’s soul.”

“I would like to nominate Michelle Beckham for the Digital Native Award She has been helping the community with presenting & teaching classes for New Media over that past year.”

“This is the hardest one, because I feel like it described so many of our members. I would like to nominate Michelle Beckham-Corbin because I feel like she has a reach beyond the online community and is able to help non-natives feel comfortable and see the benefits of social media.”

Daniel Johnson, Jr.

“I nominate Daniel Johnson, Jr. No one else is out as early and often as him.”

Christian Sheehy

“I am nominating Christian Sheehy for the Digital Native Award. Christian is the manager of the TechCenter in the main public library downtown. Since he was hired into the position, he increased the quantity and quality of free classes, enabled TechCenter staff to develop new classes, and has taught countless people skills from using a mouse to connecting with people over LinkedIn.

Kevin Dugan

UPDATE: Kevin Dugan has asked to be removed from the list of nominees so that others may receive the spotlight. More details here.

“I would like to nominate Kevin Dugan for the Digital Native Award. Kevin goes above and beyond to bring best-in-class business examples of digital/social media tool implementation to the surrounding community via the many touch-points that carry his digital signature:

@prblog on Twitter

Strategic Public Relations Blog

Co-Founder of Cincinnati Social Media (CincySM, Inc.)

Moderator for the CincySM LinkedIn Group Community

and multitude of other spaces.

Kevin is the tireless face that is pushing the message about the great things that are happening in Cincinnati; whether it’s P&G’s Man of the House Blog, The Brandery, or United Way’s social media campaign to raise awareness and donations. His efforts are contributing to Cincinnati’s development as a digital hub. Kevin volunteers his time and expertise as a speaker at many local events/conferences like SummitUp. He is the real deal talking about how the rubber in social media meets the road and makes an impact on business results.

NMC Digital Giving First Award

Michelle Beckham

Vickie Sceifers

Christiaan Todd

“I’m nominating Christiaan Todd for the Digital Giving First Award. He is the go to guy when it comes to techy stuff. He is always sharing apps for my phone or computer that make life simpler and fun. He analyzes and knows the best tools to get the job done. He has been very active on LinkedIn, FB,Twitter, YouTube, his company’s blog, and our NMC group. He loves to take pics to promote the NMC group. He is always giving advice on forums, suggesting phones to use, processes to follow. People are always calling, DMing, posting, and asking how to do “this is or that” when it comes to communicating through New Media – and he loves to share the cool tools he knows. I’m always amazed at the information he knows. He just gets it and he doesn’t mind helping others. Maybe one day I can convince him to start a blog sharing the cool tools and tips he knows (actually Michelle Beckham suggested this recently and I think it is a grand idea).”

Crystal Thies

“Crystal Thies was the first person I thought of here. She is so willing to share her knowledge, and I know her help has had an impact on many members of NMC, and the greater community as well.”

NMC Digital Go the Distance Dedication Award

Tom Rockhold

“I nominate Tom, the heavy duty tech guy who lives in Reynoldsburg, Ohio and comes down to almost every meeting we have in Cincinnati.”

Daniel Johnson, Jr.

“I’m nominating Daniel Johnson, Jr. for the Digital Go the Distance Award. Daniel not only founded the group but has kept it going. He has not only kept it going but kept it interesting and fun. His knowledge and innovativeness are very inspiring. I love when people come up with great ideas and he is full of them.”

Don and Vickie Sceifers

“I want to nominate a team for this one, if that’s allowed: Don and Vickie Sceifers! I know they don’t technically travel extraordinarily far, but the resources they’ve used to help the community, with video and Ustream, etc, have been awesome (especially when I’ve been sick and had to miss a meeting!)”

<itunes:summary>A couple weeks ago we put out the call for nominations for the New Media Cincinnati Digital Awards. You still have time to get your nominations in! We're accepting nominations until Wednesday, November 5, 2010 at 5 PM Eastern time. Email daniel at newmediacincinnati dot com. UPDATE: Nominations are now closed. I received one additional nomination, for Kevin Dugan, which I've included below. Voting is now open - register here.
Below are the nominations received so far. I've also included the text - where provided to me - that others have used when nominating.
NMC Digital Native Award
Mike Boehmer
"I believe Mike Boehmer deserves to win the NMC Digital Award. I know from personal experience that Mike spends so much time reading books and searching the Internet to learn the latest trends. And he is always on his Droid and uses other tools to practice what he knows... And he generously shares his knowledge with others through networking, personal contacts and his blog. Mike has become known around the city as someone who not only knows social media; but actually practices it.
"Here is a list of talks and services he has given free of charge to help promote digital literacy and community building over the past year:
Bold Fusion by Cincinnati USA Chamber of Commerce in 2009
Clermont County Chamber of Commerce Social Media Bootcamp
	Cincinnati PRSA chapter
Ohio Job and Family Services IT directors in Columbus
Ohio Job and Family Services county and state agency directors in Columbus
New Thought Unity Center community training session
	Hamilton County employees training
	Applesiders (Apple users) group
	Arkansas Department of Human Services
Served as the first social media chair of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Tweeted and/or blogged from many of PRSA's events this year
Was named Hamilton County Employee of the Year for Innovation in 2009 (to help improve communication with the community after the agency’s cutbacks)
Social media work at Hamilton County JFS has been detailed in several national government journals
Served as guest blogger at BlogWell and guest Tweeter at Bold Fusion 2010.
Always tweeting/blogging from events such as the Digital Non-Conference."
Michelle Beckham
"... for her inspiration and leadership in delivering for our community Social Media with a servant's soul."
"I would like to nominate Michelle Beckham for the Digital Native Award She has been helping the community with presenting & teaching classes for New Media over that past year."
"This is the hardest one, because I feel like it described so many of our members. I would like to nominate Michelle Beckham-Corbin because I feel like she has a reach beyond the online community and is able to help non-natives feel comfortable and see the benefits of social media."
Daniel Johnson, Jr.
"I nominate Daniel Johnson, Jr. No one else is out as early and often as him."
Christian Sheehy
"I am nominating Christian Sheehy for the Digital Native Award.
