New Media Cincinnati began in October 2007 as a simple meetup group of people in the Cincinnati, Dayton, and Northern Kentucky areas who were passionate about new and social media technologies like blogging, podcasting, Twitter, etc.

The group consists of people who are using new and social media for a living, but also includes people who are simply involved as a hobby. Anyone interested in learning more about these technologies and in connecting with others is welcome to attend. New Media Cincinnati has become, as one attendee remarked, “the premiere social networking event in the Greater Cincinnati area.” The group’s mission has grown to one of promoting digital literacy in our community.

People who come to New Media Cincinnati Second Saturdays

make and foster business and personal connections with at least one other person,
have face-to-face time with social media connections made online,
learn from one another about social media technologies as we share best practices and other tips
have the chance to talk about their own online presence
have opportunities to share something they know with the rest of the group
partake of food and drink and in general have a great time!

Connecting at New Media Cincinnati Second Saturdays has led to new business and employment for some.

This month we will be meeting again at Molly Malone’s in Covington from 3 PM to 6 PM.

Agenda

3:00-4:00 PM: Socializing/ice-breaker activity. A/V equipment setup (if needed)

4:00-4:15 PM: Steering Committee update and other announcements.

4:15-5:00 PM: Roger Bora, from Thompson-Hine, “Ten Things Businesses Should Know About Intellectual Property,Including New Media and the Law, copyrights and trademarks.”

5:00-6:00 PM: More socializing

What you can expect to learn

Federal Trade Commission’s Guidelines for advertising and endorsements, which include promoting products/services via blogging and “tweeting”;
Use of non-disclosure agreements to help grow your business and business partnerships while protecting your intellectual property and proprietary information;
Intellectual property infringement trends in social media and how to protect your IP rights;
Copyrights: What are they? How are they acquired? How to best protect those rights online and in social media networks;
Spam laws: What are they and how not to voilate them;
Virtual worlds and your intellectual property: Things you should know.

About Roger Bora

Roger is a member of the Intellectual Property practice group at Thompson-Hine LLP. Roger concentrates his practice in trademark law. His practice includes the management of global trademark portfolios; counseling clients on the selection of trademarks; trademark clearance; trademark prosecution; trademark policing and enforcement strategies; trade dress law; conflict resolution; representing clients before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and Trademark Trial and Appeal Board in trademark registration opposition and cancelation proceedings; federal trademark litigation; domain name registration, counseling and enforcement; preparation of trademark licenses and other agreements pertaining to intellectual property; copyright counseling and registration; internet issues.

Before joining Thompson Hine, Roger was a practicing trademark attorney in a major law firm in Northern New England. Prior to entering private practice, he was a practicing trademark attorney, and previous to that an intern, while in law school, at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office in Arlington, Virginia. Roger also interned at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board under the direction of Judge Gerard Rogers, and worked on detail assignments with the Office of the Commissioner for Trademarks and Post Registration Division while employed by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Roger is also one of the members of the New Media Cincinnati Steering Committee.

2009 in Review

It is hard to believe this is the last Second Saturday we’ll be having in 2009! How have you changed over the past year? In what ways has your involvement in this space made you different? Come prepared to share your individual stories with the group.

Yesterday was another great New Media Cincinnati Second Saturday, in which people in the area passionate about social media and networking came together. We held the event again at The Pub at Rookwood Mews in Cincinnati. Based on the attendee list, about half the people who RSVP’d were attending for the first time. Do check it out to connect with people if you haven’t already done so.

Colleagues or Competitors?

Probably one of the least technical discussions we’ve had in some time, the topic I moderated was “Colleagues or Competitors.” Below is the series of videos from the UStream channel. The next New Media Cincinnati Second Saturday will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2009 from 4-7 PM at The Pub Rookwood Mews, the same place we have had the meetups since the beginning of the year. New Media Cincinnati April Meetup Announcement – New Media Roundtable

The next New Media Cincinnati meetup will take place on Saturday, April 11, 2009 from 4-6 PM at The Pub Rookwood Mews, the same place we have had the meetups since the beginning of the year. Find all the details and how to RSVP on the Eventbrite page.

Some have expressed an interest in donating to the group, so I’ve created a way to do that via the Eventbrite page. In addition, to help plan for future events, I have created Gold Sponsor tickets at $250 each. An individual or organization can now sponsor New Media Cincinnati, and the funds will go toward future events as well.

Theme: New Media Roundtable

The theme for this month’s event is New Media Roundtable. As discussed in the Eventbrite page, we will be having roundtable discussions on the following topics, many of which have come from the New Media Cincinnati wiki:

Successful ways to promote your blog, podcast, website, etc.
When social media is right for you and/or your project
Strategies for dealing with the flood of content that is available on the web
Successful ways of using new and social media tools to get work

We will be discussing these topics in groups at our tables and reporting back to the entire group. I believe we’re in for an interesting discussion.
