The Steering Committee has been discussing possible questions around privacy, the web, and social networking tools in preparation for tomorrow’s Second Saturday event.

Some background posts and resources that have prompted our discussion:

Twenty Questions About Online Nakedness And Privacy

The order below is in no particular importance, but useful for reference in the comments:

What are some must-haves for your privacy on a Facebook Business page? What are your must-haves for privacy on Facebook?

How private is too private? If you keep yourself totally locked down, then doesn’t that defeat the purpose of being social on social networks?

Does your IT department block social networking sites at your work? What is their rationale, and how does this hinder your ability to use social networking sites on your job?

From a legal standpoint, what can I do to protect what my employees are saying online, either as explicit representatives of my company/brand, or as themselves but otherwise associated with my company/brand?

What is your personal strategy for using Facebook? Do you use it to connect with family and old friends, or do you use it for business? Is there a way to keep them separate?

What steps have you taken on social networking sites to keep your profile private?

Were pictures of you among the 750M uploaded to Facebook on New Year’s Weekend?

What do you do when you realize you’ve been tagged in a photo? What if a questionable photo was live on your page for a week, and you happened to be offline but your boss and colleagues were not?

Should you or have you connected with your boss on Facebook?

What is going on with Facebook’s Instant Personalization? What are its benefits to me, and what can I do if I don’t want it enabled?

Should you really be concerned about posting where you are on sites like Foursquare and Gowalla or Facebook Places? Should you be concerned about the premise of PleaseRobMe.com?

Should you “geotag” your tweets (updates from Twitter)?

How can I manage what I say on Twitter best protect my privacy?

Describe some potential situations in real life in which you think it would not be best to connect online.

How do you tactfully decline a connection request (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Google Buzz, etc.)?

How do you remove a connection/friend on these social networking sites? Do they get notified when I do this?

How does posting content online affect your career? We want our businesses to be high profile, but what about the behavior of our employees when that content is less than attractive?

Is there a benefit to having lists or groups of people on Facebook? Is there a way to control what people in these lists see? (Limited profile settings, perhaps?)

Should I accept a Friend request from a profile that is a business (i.e., not a human at a business)? Facebook friend vs Facebook page, etc., on Foursquare, too.

What benefit, if any, is there to being connecting with a venue on Foursquare?

As mentioned in the video, I think the discussion on finding value is one we should continue to have and it will be the topic for next month’s Second Saturday event.

The group consists of people who are using new and social media for a living, but also includes people who are simply involved as a hobby. Anyone interested in learning more about these technologies and in connecting with others is welcome to attend. New Media Cincinnati has become, as one attendee remarked, “the premiere social networking event in the Greater Cincinnati area.” The group’s mission has grown to one of promoting digital literacy in our community.

As a springboard from last month’s discussion about Google Buzz, as well as some other news over the past month about location-based social networking tools, this month we will have a panel discussion on Privacy in Social Media. We will have three panelists approach their use of social media with different levels of privacy.

As always, we will leave ample time for the open networking that so many of us enjoy.

Hey gang!

We’ve just sold out of all the tickets for tomorrow’s event. I know we’re all looking forward to getting together at The Pub tomorrow. We’ve just sold out the event!

I encourage you to check out the event page to see the list of who’s all coming; there are a number of you will be there for the first time tomorrow. We’re looking forward to meeting you!

Some things to keep in mind:

Special thanks again to The Pub for letting us use their patio, and to Chad Middleton from Outerwoven (http://twitter.com/outerwoven) for sponsoring the event. I know we’re looking forward to hearing what he has to say about how the tax changes in 2009 affect us as employees and business owners in the coming year.

The Bengals-Jets playoff game will be happening around the time of our meeting. That may mean that parking spaces in the Pub’s lot could be taken up. I encourage you to use the parking garage across from The Pub – it’s free, too.

My friend Bernie Warren (http://twitter.com/berniewarren) will be helping out with name tags. I’ll have blank tags and markers for you to write your name and, if you’d like, something you’re looking forward to in the New Year. Thanks for your help in advance, Bernie!

You are encouraged to bring your cameras, mobile devices, laptops, etc. and create content during the event about the event.

It looks like we’re going to be able to stream the event to the internet via UStream again. Thank you again to Don (http://twitter.com/drsceifers) and Vickie Sceifers (http://twitter.com/editvdo) for all your work in getting this done!

If you haven’t already become a fan of New Media Cincinnati on Facebook, I encourage you to do so: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cincinnati-OH/New-Media-Cincinnati/77571459981

Whether you like it or not, somebody is talking about your business on the web and making money depends on the public perception of your company! Outerwoven can help you discover what’s being said and how to shape the conversation.

Topic

Whether we are in business for ourselves or working for someone else, the changes to the tax laws in 2009 affect all of us. As we all begin to get ready for tax season, Chad from Outerwoven will talk to us about what these changes are and how they affect us.

We will also leave ample time for the open networking that so many of us enjoy.
